Allan Lane, PhD, Managing Partner

Allan is a founding partner of Twenty20 Investments. Prior to this Allan spearheaded BlackRock’s iShares’ investment research initiative in Europe, working with a number of clients in the portfolio solutions space. Previously he headed up the ETF Product R&D team.

Before joining iShares in 2008, Allan had previously spent 3 years within the Active Fixed Income business at Barclays Global Investors, where he was responsible for building out the investment platform, focusing on a range of trading strategies in the rates and credit arena. Allan has also held a number of senior roles in the investment banking industry, including a period at RBS where he was The Global Head of Quantitative Research, responsible for the models used to value the structured notes product range used by the bank’s equity, rates, credit and fx business lines. In his rookie years in the early 1990s, he learnt the craft of stochastic calculus as a derivatives specialist at Banque Paribas, before being recruited to head up JP Morgan’s Equity Derivatives Models team.

Allan studied Mathematics at Oxford University and Cambridge University before subsequently gaining his PhD in Theoretical Physics at The University of Washington in the US. With his close ties to The Pacific Northwest in the USA, Allan has served on the Board of Regents at the Honors College at Oregon State University, where he is now an Emeritus Member.

Irene Bauer, PhD. Chief Investment Officer

Chief Investment Officer Irene is a founding partner of Twenty20 Investments and is a leading specialist in innovative portfolio construction models which control target risk while optimising the portfolio's returns. Previously, Irene has been at iShares, BlackRock, providing portfolio solutions for their Client Group, along with insights gained from a rigorous ETF investment research process. Prior to that, Irene gained experience across all aspects of ETFs while designing and researching new ETF products at iShares, covering the fixed income, equities, commodities & alternatives asset classes.

In her time at Barclays Global Investors Irene worked within the asset allocation team in the Active Fixed Income business, where she applied her expertise to the scientific investment approach of BGI. Her career in the financial services industry started at ABN Amro where she was responsible for the modelling of structured products, specializing in mortgage backed securities.

Irene has a degree in mathematics from the University of Augsburg, Germany, completing her doctorate thesis in numerical mathematics at the University of Heidelberg. After obtaining her PhD, Irene spent a number of years focusing on the commercial development of statistical models and optimisation tools.

Tim Watkin, External Advisor, Systematic Investing

Tim is a financial markets expert who has been managing money professionally for over twenty years. During his career he created the Discretionary Investment Management desk for HSBC Private Bank (UK) Ltd., where he pioneered the use of ETFs in discretionary portfolios for an Ultra-High-Net-Worth client base.

Prior to this he built a fully systematic US equity hedge fund. Tim has managed money for clients based on four continents, as well as for Pensions, Charities and Corporates. He enjoys applying a scientific approach to investments and developing a deeper understanding of how all financial markets are connected and work together in the economy. He studied at Bristol University gaining a BSc in Chemistry.

Ani Banerjee, Entrepreneur In Residence

Ani Banerjee is an investment professional and dreamer with 12 years of eclectic experience in investment banking and financial markets.

Prior to his recent role at BlackRock, Ani was a Partner at Cheyne Capital Management in London, and an investment professional at Citigroup. Holding a Master's degree from a Grande Ecole in Rouen, France Ani has also received advanced training in economics, applied valuation and business economics from the London School of Economics and the University of Oxford.

On the advisory board of several technology start-ups, Ani has a contagious, tireless passion for helping them with the oxygen they need to become great businesses.

Marek Trepka, Business Development

Marek is responsible for Twenty20 Investment's business development in Continental Europe.

Previously Marek’s broad experience spans his role as an operations manager at the systematic hedge fund Metrum Capital, as a trader, ETF Market-Maker and risk manager, having spent a number of years working for Saxon Financial.

Marek began his career in the financial industry at the London office of Deutsche Boerse in 1998 and has a degree in Banking & Finance from the CASS Business School in London.

John Ligda, Digital Marketing & Data Solutions

John is a data operations professional with over fifteen years’ experience in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. In addition to building financial warehouse solutions for wealth management firms, John has also worked alongside Stanford scientists and entrepreneurs to develop highly specialized compliance and regulatory reporting systems.

“What excites me most about my work is developing a direct connection to stakeholders, formulating the right questions and learning together the most profitable solutions.” In his spare time John creates mark-making drawings from life models and still life. His work has juried awards and is in private collections around the world. John has a BS Degree in Computer & Information Systems, California State University.

David Marsh, External Advisor

David is co-chairman of OMFIF, the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum, a Senior Adviser to London-based asset management company Soditic CBIP LLP and chairman of the advisory board of independent investment bank London and Oxford Group. Previously he worked for City merchant bank Robert Fleming, corporate finance boutique Hawkpoint and German management consultancy Droege. He worked for the Financial Times between 1978 and 1995, including in France and Germany, becoming European editor.

Marsh is a board member of Henderson Eurotrust, British Chamber of Commerce in Germany and Institute for Corporate Cultural Affairs, deputy chairman of German-British Forum, advisory board member of Centre for European Reform and honorary professor at the University of Birmingham. He was made Commander of the British Empire in 2000 and was awarded the German Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in 2003.

Marsh has written four books: Germany – Rich, Bothered and Divided (1989); The Bundesbank – The Bank that Rules Europe (1992); Germany and Europe – The Crisis of Unity (1994); The Euro – The Politics of the New Global Currency (2009 – re-released in 2011 as The Battle for the New Global Currency). He is a frequent media commentator in Europe and the US.

Gareth Parker, External Advisor on Index Research, Design & Development

Gareth is an index, factor indexing and smart beta expert and researcher with a 23-year history working for major index providers. His most recent role was at Russell Indexes, where he instigated and co-led the build-out of the company’s EMEA proposition from data and licences sales on a single index to being active in an entirely new segment of the market. During his career he has created or managed some of the world’s best known indices, such as FTSE4Good, FTSE RAFI, S&P Risk Control, and worked with exchanges around the world, including Athex, NASDAQ, Moscow Exchange, Euronext and of course the London Stock Exchange. He advises Twenty20 Investments on index and smart beta / factor index and index-based product matters.

Gareth graduated with an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, and in his spare time is Chairman of a charitable campaign working to refit a large ocean-going yacht and send more than a hundred teenagers on a transatlantic tall ships race in 2017.
